HTML5 Microsite Game: Running An Effective Competition With Leaderboards

5 min read

We recently developed a full microsite game for a consumer-focused brand.

Video

Here’s a demo video of the game.

User Journey

  • Step1: The player sees the promotional banner in their social media fees (FB, Twitter, Instagram).
  • Step2: The player clicks through, and goes the microsite URL.
  • Step3: The player uploads a receipt as proof of purchase (of the client’s product).
  • Step4: The player registers their name and email on the game, and starts playing every day.
  • Step5: The player watches the social media feeds and leaderboards, for any announcements.

Gameplay

In this endless runner game, the player rides a trolley down an endless slope, being chased by a giant pizza that’s rolling and crashing through the countryside.

Scores are calculated based on how far the player can go along the slope. Scores are submitted to our MarketJS cloud leaderboard server.

In addition to score, the player collects coins. Coins are then used in the shop to upgrade various player attributes, to get a better score.

We also implement skills, where players can flip forwards or backwards while suspended in the air. If the player executes the skills beautifully, they earn bonus points that contribute to the leaderboard.

Objectives

The objectives of this campaign are to

  • Create an interactive experience for fans of the pizza brand
  • Integrate core brand elements such as the client’s beloved mascot character
  • Give away prizes based on Top 10 leaderboard rankings

Cost Control

We reskinned an existing game on MarketJS via our Game Reskin method.

By using this method, we’re able to save up to 70% of costs (versus developing a custom game from scratch, which could potentially take 3-4 months). The project was completed within 2 weeks.

Game Reskinning Details

  • Original Game: Pepperoni Gone Wild
  • Reskinned the entire game into pizza centric theme
  • Added a leaderboard where players compete for the highest score. Top 10 scores are visible to everyone.

Microsite

Here’s how the microsite looks like HTML5 Microsite Game: Running An Effective Competition With Leaderboards

Promotion

The microsite URL was plugged into the client’s social media feeds.

Uploading receipts as a way to drive more sales

Any user can play the game. However, to be eligible to win prizes, users must first purchase a pizza product and upload the receipt to the customer support’s Whatsapp Business channel. Once the receipt is verified by staff, the user receives a special unique code that can be entered in the game, to qualify. This mechanism alone led to an improvement in sales figures. In order to drive more recurring sales, we also implemented a power-up advantage for users who entered the unique code. The power-up gave users a bigger score boost within the next 10 attempts in the game.

Winners

Winners are decided by the organizer on a rolling basis, throughout the campaign period
